Baconton Charter shares State Farm donation with Challenger League
Baconton Community Charter School shares $1,000 donation with The Challenger League

ALBANY — Karen Cohilas opened her Albany State Farm Insurance agency in January. She enjoyed a successful opening and wanted to give back to her community. She held a contest to give away a $500 donation to a nonprofit group chosen by the community. The race was close between the Challenger League of Leesburg and the Baconton Community Charter School Beta Club, but the Beta Club won by a hair.
The “competition” did not end there for the two clubs.
“What nobody knew at the time was that State Farm would actually match my donation, so I submitted the donation I made to Baconton Charter to State Farm, and they matched it,” Cohilas said. “When the Beta Club from Baconton Charter found out that they were getting the additional money, they immediately decided that they would give it back to the Challenger League.
“Not only did they give them the money, they’ve already partnered and are volunteering with that group. It’s already formed this really great partnership, and to me it’s just so heartwarming.”
Representatives of both groups gathered at Cohilas’ office Friday to surprise The Challenger League with their half of the donation.
The BCCS Beta Club used its $500 donated from Cohilas and State Farm to hold an Easter egg hunt for disabled adults at the Mitchell-Baker Service center in Camilla. The Challenger League provides social and recreational opportunities for disabled children, with an athletic program designed just for them.
“I’m just so proud that those kids saw the need to help another organization out; I think that’s what everybody wants when they do give back to an organization is to know that somebody is going to pay it forward,” Cohilas said. “I can’t think of a better example than this.”
