ALBANY — The Dougherty County School Board held its regular monthly meeting Monday night and sped through a light agenda.

Prior to the meeting’s start, the DCSS board joined in a statewide celebration to salute the efforts of the county’s local school board members. March 13-17 is School Board Appreciation Week in Georgia. The weeklong observance calls attention to the contributions of local boards of education.

As constitutional officers of Georgia, school board members are responsible for setting educational policies, employing school personnel, providing buildings and equipment, operating a transportation system and disbursing school funds. As community leaders, school board members serve as advocates for the children in local public schools and must study, evaluate and decide what actions are in the best interest of those students.

Board members Melissa Strother, Milton Griffin, James Bush, Robert Youngblood, Dean Phinazee and Geraldine Hudley received certificates of appreciation for their service to the community. Board Chair Velvet Riggins was absent from the meeting.

“I have worked in nine different school districts throughout the state, and this particular board has been the easiest to work with,” Superintendent Butch Mosely said. “We have worked well together, and they have also served the community well. They deserve much of the credit for the progress we have made over the course of my tenure here.”

During the work session, the board approved the employment and release of personnel.

The short agenda consisted of four requests for approval of items sent before the full board from the finance committee.

The board approved Georgia Department of Education grant budgets totaling $9,543,972 and entered into a School Improvement Grant agreement with the Success for All Foundation worth $135,799 for Martin Luther King Elementary School.

The board also approved a January 2017 financial report from Assistant Superintendent/CFO Ken Dyer along with the FY 2018 Budget Development Calendar.

The next meeting of the School Board is scheduled for March 22 at 11:30 a.m.
