CAMILLA — Mitchell County High School graduate and U.S. Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Darris Spence was recently Blue Jacket of the Year.

Spence, a native of Camilla, has served in the Navy for seven years as a Culinary Specialist. He is a 2009 Mitchell County High School graduate and is currently serving at Naval Support Activity Hampton Roads-Northwest Annex.

“Personally, I’m a better person than I was when I left Camilla,” Spence said in a news release sent by the Navy. “During my career, going from different countries and exploring their cultures, I’m amazed at the differences between the U.S. and other countries’ lifestyles. Professionally, my attention to detail is a plus for me as it has helped me so much from inside and outside the Navy.”

Naval Support Activity Hampton Roads provides consistent, operationally ready and secure shore installation support services allowing tenant activities to dedicate their resources to the fleet and fighter, the release noted.
