ALBANY – Albany Technical College’s Alpha Alpha Alpha (Tri-Alpha) Honor Society will welcome its inaugural class of inductees during a ceremony Tuesday in the Kirkland Conference Center.

The induction ceremony will be held at 6:30 p.m. The program will focus on educating attendees about Tri-Alpha and its history and benefits. The introduction of Tri-Alpha Honor Society inductees further enhances the support structures at ATC for first-generation college students.

Alpha Alpha Alpha Honor Society approved and welcomed ATC on Jan. 22, chartering the Iota Psi Chapter. Induction into Tri-Alpha, founded in March 2018 at what is now Moravian University, is by chapter invitation for eligible first-generation college students. Induction requirements include:

— Full-time enrollment in an associate degree program.

— Completion of at least three full-time semesters of study with a minimum of 30 curriculum credits.

== An overall GPA of 3.2 or higher.

While young, Tri-Alpha recognizes academic achievements and promotes leadership while providing overall support. It is not a sorority or fraternity but a national honor society that connects first-generation students, centering around each other and allowing a community of students to have a lifelong connection.

Tri-Alpha is open to all first-gen students with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2 who have earned 30 credit hours. Recruitment will occur each year, and the Iota Psi Chapter plans to induct first-gen faculty, staff, and alums in the future. The inaugural class includes 17 students and 10 faculty/staff.

Local chapters may induct faculty, staff, and alums who were first-generation college students when they graduated. They also must have a relevant, ongoing connection to the institution granting membership, including service as a faculty or staff member, donor, board member or volunteer.

Albany Technical College and the Iota Psi Chapter of Alpha Alpha Alpha continue to take steps to foster a welcoming and supportive environment where first-generation students can thrive academically and personally.
