Georgia Southwestern sets enrollment record

AMERICUS — Georgia Southwestern State University marked another record-breaking enrollment with 3,704 students, the highest total enrollment in GSW’s history. This 8.5% surge over last year’s student population total is the highest increase within the University System of Georgia’s “State University” sector. As a result, GSW earned the Chancellor’s Cup award by USG Chancellor Sonny Perdue for the fourth consecutive semester.

GSW also earned the inaugural Chancellor’s Award for the largest increase in 6-year graduation rates for first-time, full-time freshmen across the USG. GSW achieved a 7.9% increase from the 2017 to 2018 cohort, reflecting the share of students who began at GSW and completed their degree at any USG institution.

Over the past five years, GSW’s enrollment has grown nearly 26%. This fall, GSW saw growth across multiple areas, including traditional college freshmen, dual enrollment, undergraduate and graduate students.

“We are extremely proud to be among the USG’s top leaders in enrollment growth and graduation rate increases,” GSW President Michelle Johnston said. “This accomplishment is a testament to the strategic efforts and dedication of our faculty and staff, who work tirelessly to attract, support and retain our outstanding students. Officials at the college said much of GSW’s enrollment success can be attributed to a blend of:

— Adding new academic programs that align with the region’s work force needs;

— Expanding scholarship offerings making college more affordable;

— Implementing student success, engagement, and leadership initiatives;

— Engaging a comprehensive recruitment strategy and targeted outreach efforts;

— Adding new and enhancing existing campus facilities to meet the needs of students;

— Offering accredited, quality programs that are top-ranked regionally and nationally;

— Maintaining affordable tuition to alleviate financial strain on graduates.

By actively engaging prospective students through these initiatives, GSW strives to create a welcoming and inclusive environment that fosters academic excellence and personal growth.

Additionally, Georgia Match, an initiative that encourages high school seniors to apply by sending them direct admissions offers, has played a significant role in boosting interest and applications among prospective students.

The fall semester annual report stated increases were seen at all 26 of the USG’s public colleges and universities. Enrollment climbed to a record high of 364,725 students. The 5.9% increase over enrollment in fall 2023 is the second consecutive year of growth for the system and outpaces a 2.9% increase observed nationally.

“USG is in the business of boosting the state’s work force and contributing to economic development, and that means not just enrolling students but getting them to graduation so they can have a positive impact on both their families and the state,” USG Chancellor Sonny Perdue said. “Right now, our schools are awarding a record number of degrees while also helping more students than ever pursue a higher education. That’s a win for them and for Georgia, and I’m grateful to presidents, faculty and staff for the hard work they’re doing to help our students succeed.”

These enrollment numbers were released in the USG’s annual fall semester enrollment report, which analyzes enrollment data by institution, age, gender, race and ethnicity, in-state, out-of-state and international students.
