DAWSON — John Fox Road at Walk-Ikey Creek is scheduled to close today so a contractor can replace a structurally deficient bridge that was built in 1955.

The bridge is about 6 miles southwest of Dawson. Contractor Southern Concrete Construction Co. Inc. is permitted to close the road for 180 calendar days. The detour route will utilize U.S. 82 and Georgia Highway 45. Signs will direct motorists.

The construction cost is a little more than $1.1 million. The replacement is part of the Georgia Department of Transportation’s Low Impact Bridge Program. Construction is faster due to the use of some prefabricated components. Closing the road and using an off-site detour also expedites construction. DOT has already begun work in the region to repair cracks, raveling and other road deficiencies that create a rough ride on Interstate 75 in Turner and Crisp counties. That project began last week.

The project started south of Exit 84/SR 159 in Turner County and ends north of Old Hatley Road in Crisp County, a distance of 14.47 miles. It includes ramps. Contractor Reeves Construction Co. started on the northbound right (outside) shoulder around milepost 84 in Turner County, which required closing the right lane.

No daytime lane closures will be permitted during the project. Single-lane closures will be allowed from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. and double-lane closures from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Weather will impact the planned work schedule.

Resurfacing is not expected to begin on the southbound lanes until the northbound lanes are complete. The $19.2 million Georgia Department of Transportation project is expected to be finished April 30, 2019. This portion of I-75 hasn’t been resurfaced since a widening/reconstruction project was completed in 2003.

DOT is also currently doing clearing work along state routes in Dougherty County.
