Dougherty County hands out service awards
Dougherty officials recognize employees with 5-40 years of service

ALBANY — Dougherty County honored employees on Friday who have worked for the county in various departments for from five to 40 years during the county’s 2018 Service Awards ceremony.
Seventy-nine total employees were honored with gift certificates, plaques or gifts of their choice during the event, but the star of the show was Chucky Mathis, assistant director of Dougherty County Public Works who has served the county for 40 years since 1978.
“I’ve been honored today as a public servant for the citizens of Dougherty County for 40 years of service,” Mathis said. “I started out not with the intent to stay as long, you know, but I enjoy what I do, and I’m very appreciative to be able to serve this county.”
Operations and the landscape in Dougherty County were much different when Mathis began his work with the county, but while raising nine children, he saw Dougherty County grow, technology improve and the Christmas tree move from its place inside the courthouse during the 1970s to its current spot outside of the Government Center.
“I’ve been very appreciative of my time with the citizens of Dougherty County,” Mathis said. “I was born here, so it’s befitting that I would serve here.”
Dougherty County interim County Administrator Michael McCoy announced the awards while Dougherty County Commissioner Anthony Jones presented the gifts and took commemorative photographs with the recipients.
“You all have given your all,” Jones said. “For that, I just wanted to thank you, and thank you for your hard work. I want to thank all of the supervisors that have to work because they are great leaders and you all are great followers.”
