ALBANY — A downgraded Irma swept into Southwest Georgia early Monday morning as a tropical storm, spawning sporadic power outages and prompted regional school closings.
On Sunday, the Dougherty County School System, which had announced Monday school closures on Friday, extended the closures to Tuesday. Other school districts followed suit.
A statement from school system officials noted that all principals, assistant principals and department heads are to report to their buildings by 9 a.m. Tuesday, if conditions permit, for a damage assessment. All 12-month employees should report to their normal work sites if it is safe to do so.
“School system leadership will continue to monitor and evaluate conditions after the storm moves through and will provide any necessary updates as information becomes available,” the statement said. “As said before, take this opportunity to download the Dougherty County School System app, to follow us on social media and to stay up to date with events through local media for information on restarting.”
Also closed Tuesday are Lee County schools, Deerfield-Windsor School in Albany, Baker County schools, Calhoun County schools, Mitchell County schools, Sherwood Christian Academy in Albany, Terrell Academy, Terrell County schools, Tift County schools, Westwood School in Camilla and Worth County schools.
Tuesday classes at Albany State University, including the satellite campus in Cordele, and Albany Technical College were also canceled, according to officials at those institutions.
Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College’s Tifton Campus, ABAC’s Georgia Museum of Agriculture, ABAC’s Forest Lakes Golf Course and ABAC on the Square (in Moultrie) ended normal business operations at 11 p.m. Saturday. All ABAC facilities will reopen for business at 8 a.m. on Wednesday. All events scheduled during the period of closure have been cancelled.
ABAC residence halls and dining operations will remain open for normal business hours. ABAC police, residence life, dining personnel and physical plant personnel will remain on duty during the closure.
