Dougherty School Board awards design bid for new transportation center

ALBANY — The Dougherty County School Board breezed through its monthly meeting Wednesday, with the biggest approved item being a new transportation complex that will combine the Turner Field and Newton Road facilities at one location.
The Newton Road facility will be expanded by the acquisition of property adjacent to the existing facility to accommodate construction of the new transportation center.
Also at the meeting, the board:
— Approved a $5,250 contract with SRJ Architects to develop a building design for the transportation center and a new student transfer center, which will be located at 400 South Monroe Street;
— Accepted, by a 6-1 vote, the resignation of DCSS Police Chief Investigator J.C. Phillips, effective Nov. 17. Board member Milton “June Bug” Griffin cast the lone no vote. Phillips has been with the school system since 2009;
— Awarded a $181,600 contract to Elevate K-12, a live online Personalized Tier II and Tier III intervention and learning program aligned to standards, content specific and meeting student’s intervention needs;
— Authorized Board Chair Velvet Edwards-Poole and Superintendent Ken Dyer to execute a note with Ameris Bank for a TAN (Tax Anticipation Note) not to exceed $8 million;
— Approved the recommendation for International Studies Elementary Charter School to terminate its charter and become a charter school system under the DCSS.
The next meeting of the School Board is set for Nov. 13 at 6:30 p.m.
