Downtown Albany holding holiday window display contest
Businesses in downtown Albany are encouraged to decorate their storefronts for a holiday contest

ALBANY — The Downtown Albany office is encouraging the district’s businesses to get into the holiday spirit with a holiday window decorating contest, the first holiday-centered contest to be held downtown.
“The idea sparked during a Christmas parade committee meeting,” interim Downtown Manager Jacquelyn Teemer said. “There was some talk about getting downtown businesses more involved in decorating their stores so I felt like this would be a great opportunity for them to do that and also provide a bit of incentive as well.”
Businesses located within the Central Business District can put out holiday-themed displays in their store windows for a chance to win the contest. Window displays must be out by Dec. 15, but voting will begin on Friday and continue until Dec. 19.
The city of Albany’s website said the winner will be announced on Dec. 20 and will be featured on the city and downtown Albany websites, as well as be featured in a half-page advertisement in The Albany Herald in the Dec. 26 edition.
“My original plan was to wait until next year so that we would have a little bit more time to carry (the contest) out prior to the Christmas parade, but with the Christmas parade being rescheduled to another date gives us an opportunity to proceed,” Teemer said. “This is the first year that we are attempting a contest like this so we really want the community to get involved and for businesses to get involved so we can continue to have contests like this for the next years to come.”
Displays must be visibly festive from the outside of the business, and businesses must post nighttime photos of their storefronts on Facebook with the hashtag #downtownalbanyholidaycontest. Photos of the displays will be shared on the downtown Albany Facebook page to be liked and shared by patrons, customers and visitors.
“Hopefully this contest can help to further bridge the gap between the Albany residents and the downtown businesses,” Teemer said.
The theme in conjunction with the 2018 Celebration of Lights Christmas parade is “We Need a Little Christmas.”
