Eight domestic violence nonprofits receive nearly $2.5 million in grants
Judicial Council Committee awarded funds to agencies

ATLANTA — Eight nonprofit agencies, including one in Albany and one in Americus, received grants from the Judicial Council of Georgia Standing Committee on Grants on Wednesday. The amount of funds awarded adds up to a total of $2,425,000.
Georgia Legal Services of Albany received a $1,604,038 grant, while Southwest Georgia Victim’s Assistance Alliance of Americus will receive $5,000.
The following nonprofits received grants for Fiscal Year 2019:
— Atlanta Legal Aid Society: $699,504
— Cherokee Family Violence Center, Inc.: $9,000
— Gateway House: $10,365
— Georgia Legal Services Program (of Albany): $1,604,038
— Northeast Georgia Shelter Collaborative: 47,385
— Northwest Georgia Family Crisis Center, Inc.: $36,921
— Southwest Georgia Victim’s Assistance Alliance: $5,000
— Wayne County Protective Agency/Fair Haven: $12,787
“The funds are used to provide direct civil legal assistance to low-income Georgia victims of domestic violence and their children,” the council said in a news release. “The Georgia General Assembly first appropriated funds to the Judicial Council of Georgia for its legal assistance to families victimized by domestic violence project (Civil Assistance Project) in 1999, and funding has continued each subsequent legislative session.”
