Fights break out downtown during fireworks
Staff Reports
According to city officials, a series of fights in Turtle Park delayed the firing of the city’s July 4 grand fireworks finale. Officials organizing the event said the crowd had to be dispersed at Turtle Park, reportedly using pepper spray.
It was not confirmed, but there were concerns that the sounds from the fireworks finale may mask gunshots, and the show was delayed. Turtle Park was cleared and traffic escorted out. This led to confusion downtown as thousands of people tried to leave at once although police presence was heavy in the area. Scattered fights continue to break out as people were leaving. There were no confirmed gunshots.
The finale resumed around 10:30 p.m.
