Full STEAM ahead; new summer camps start in June
Local science teacher organizes summer camps
From Staff Reports
ALBANY — Braniacs 21st Century Learning will host a summer camp at which children in pre-K to ninth grade can develop their STEAM — science, technology, engineering, arts and math — skills. Parents can register their child for either a three-week or six-week camp.
Activities are to include coding, computer science, reading, math, website development, dance and more. The site will also provide breakfast, lunch and a snack for participants.
Yineka Jefferson is the creator of Braniacs, the summer camp’s site organizer and a science teacher at Westover High School. She coordinated the summer camp because, she said, “There’s a need in Dougherty County. So many children in the county are not introduced to STEM until they graduate high school. We need STEM to foster learning.”
According to her website, “Brainiacs STEM inspires the next generation of leaders by developing a passion for STEM careers at a young age and maintaining interest throughout middle and high school. We provide students with an experiential experience that excites, engages and enriches through a unique, learn-by-doing application.”
Parents can register on Jefferson’s website, www.brainiacs21stcenturylearning.org, or on the Eventbrite website. The three-week camps — one lasts from June 4-June 22 while another is scheduled for June 25-July 13 — are priced at $100, the six-week camp is $200 and a $25 registration fee is applied to all reservations. Each day of camp lasts from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. For another $20 a week, the site will offer extended day until 5:30 p.m. These events will take place at the First Mt. Olive Educational Complex located at 513 Corn Ave.
Registration ends on June 4.
