SMITHVILLE – The Georgia Bureau of Investigation and local law enforcement agencies are investigating the deaths of two individuals found dead on Thursday afternoon at a Smithville residence.

Lee County Sheriff Reggie Rachals said the victims were both females found at a residence on Wells Street. The Smithville Police Department requested assistance from the GBI, and Rachals’ office also is assisting.

A GBI official said the agency will release information on the case late Friday.

In Albany, police have made three arrests in the fatal shooting of Markel Harper on Wednesday. Harper and Jaboris Terrell Cato were shot by the assailants.

Albany Police Department officers responded shortly before 11 p.m. to the 1000 block of Radium Springs Road to reports of a shooting. Both shooting victims at the scene were transported to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, where Harper later died.

“They were in a car,” Dougherty County Coroner Michael Fowler said. “Another car pulled up beside them and started shooting. (Cato) did not have life-threatening injuries.”

Police made three arrests in connection with the shooting on Thursday.

James Lamar Gaines, 30, and 16-year-old Janarrian Oliver were charged with murder, tampering with evidence and conspiracy. Sir Rober Moss Jr., was charged with tampering with evidence and obstruction.

Gaines and Moss were being held at the Dougherty County Jail, and Oliver was transported to the state Regional Youth Detention Center in Terrell County, police said.
