TIFTON – Shoppers looking to cash in on savings during this weekend’s sales tax holiday for back-to-school purchases are less likely be impeded by road construction lane closures, officials with the Georgia Department of Transportation say.

GDOT officials are suspending Interstate highway and state route construction-related lane closures that are within five miles of a shopping mall or a major shopping district. The suspension will be 8 a.m. Saturday through 10 p.m. Sunday, transportation officials say.

Officials say they expect traffic to be heavy throughout the weekend as shoppers take advantage of the opportunity to purchase items such as clothing, computers and computer accessories with no sales tax applied.

Also, while construction is suspended there may be roadwork crews in close proximity to traffic, GDOT officials say, and some long-term closures may stay in place because of safety concerns. They also are urging motorists to be on the lookout for incident management or emergency, maintenance-related lane closures could become necessary at any time on any route.
