THOMASVILLE — Studio 209 in Thomasville is set to host Willis Hakim Jones’s “Gullah Geechee: Making Do” exhibition focusing on African history and culture.

The exhibition opens on Thursday and will run through through Feb. 22. It is being held on behalf of the Jack Hadley Black History Museum in partnership with the Thomasville Center for the Arts.

It will feature a collection of artifacts detailing the history and culture behind the Gullah people found within the U.S. There will be an opening reception at Studio 209 beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, followed by a “collector talk” with Jones from 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Jones, a Gullah Geechee descendant, has acquired a collection of Gullah artifacts that range in date from the mid-19th century to the mid-20th century. Newspaper articles and photographs help reveal the history behind these artifacts to guests, providing insight into how enslaved Africans preserved their cultural heritage while facing displacement and the hardships that coincided with slavery.

Officials said Jones also has one of the largest collections of Islamic artifacts in the Southeast.

Guests will have an opportunity to greet Jones at the opening reception and learn about his motivation behind collecting the historical artifacts on display that detail the history of the Gullah people.

Part of the collection will be on display at the Jack Hadley Black History Museum, and the other part will be on display at Studio 209. The museum, located at 214 Alexander St., is open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday.

Studio 209 is located at 209 W. Remington Ave., and is open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
