Harveys Supermarket provides food for Albany citizens
Harveys Supermarket, city of Albany give out groceries valued at $25,000 to families in need

ALBANY — Harveys Supermarket and the city of Albany teamed up to provide $25,000 worth of produce and Southeastern Grocers brand shelf-stable products to 500 families in need on Wednesday.
Families lined up at the Albany Civic Center at 8:30 a.m. with reusable Harveys Supermarket grocery bags. Canned goods, cereals and more were distributed by volunteers including individuals from Harveys Supermarket, the Albany Police Department and the city.
Albany Mayor Dorothy Hubbard was found distributing the donated goods to the community.
“We are just delighted that Harveys and Southeastern Grocers are doing this food giveaway for 500 families in our community,” Hubbard said. “During this time of the year, it’s the season of giving and love. We appreciate the Harveys stores that are in here in Albany, and this is one of their ways of giving back to our community.”
Tammy Outlaw, district manager for the Albany market area of Harveys Supermarket, said that based on the turnout, she believes that 500 Albany families were served — primarily from the Albany Housing Authority neighborhoods impacted by Hurricane Michael.
“We are honored to be a part of this,” Outlaw said. “We’re so excited to be a part of the Albany market and even more honored and humbled to be a part of this to help our communities out during the holidays.”
The mobile food pantry has ended, but Harveys Supermarket customers can continue to give this holiday season.
“We are doing this food bank event today, but we also have ways for our community to help out at our store,” Outlaw said. “Our customers can actually help the community as well when they check out. We have donations that they can give, and we also have a $5 bag full of food that our customers can purchase to help out their local community as well.”
