Gordon’s grandson, Javian Johnson, will offer a personal message of gratitude on behalf of the family.
Establishing this lab in his name will ensure that his legacy of excellence, service, and leadership will continue to inspire future generations of surgical technologists and health care professionals. Gordon’s story is one of perseverance, dedication, and outstanding service to his community and country, and it celebrates his life in a lasting way.
The community, local health care professionals, and supporters of Albany Technical College are invited to join in the dedication ceremony honoring Gordon.
Gordon is known as a true pioneer in Albany’s medical community. He was the first African American to serve as Chief of Staff at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital and the first African American surgeon in Albany. He was also a dedicated board member of Phoebe Putney Health System. His leadership extended beyond the hospital, as he helped establish Albany Technical College’s Surgical Technology program in the early 1990s, laying the foundation for training future health care professionals in southwest Georgia.
Born and raised in Albany, Gordon’s career took him from graduating from Madison High School to earning a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Hampton Institute and a master’s degree from Tuskegee Institute. He later taught chemistry at Lincoln University and Albany State College before answering the call to medicine, earning his medical degree from Meharry Medical School.
After his medical studies, Gordon completed his surgical residency at Walter Reed Army Hospital, becoming the first African American to do so. His military career was marked by exemplary service, including commanding medical battalions during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He retired from the U.S. Army in 1968 at the rank of lieutenant colonel and later joined the Army Reserve, ultimately retiring with the rank of colonel in 1991.
In Albany, Gordon’s impact extended far beyond his medical practice. His leadership, wisdom, and community advocacy earned him the admiration of his colleagues and patients. As a surgeon, he was known for his impeccable skills and, as a speaker, for his polished diction and gentlemanly demeanor. This dedication will immortalize his contributions to the medical field and the Albany community.
The Dr. Carl Gordon Surgical Technology Lab will serve as a key educational space for students pursuing careers in health care, ensuring that Gordon’s legacy of excellence and service lives on through the education of future surgical technologists.
