ATLANTA — Georgia agriculture officials say that some cans of two brands of canned chunk light tuna sold in the state are being recalled because of possible contamination of the products.

Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black’s office said certain Bumble Bee and Chicken of the Sea “Chunk Light” products may pose health risks for consumers, though there had been no reports of any illnesses associated with the canned tune as of Thursday. The recall was prompted because of deviations that occurred during the commercial sterilization process that could result in contamination by spoilage organisms or pathogens that could lead, in turn, to life-threatening illnesses.

Ag officials said information from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration shows that Bumble Bee Foods is recalling 31,579 cases of 5-ounce cans with best-by dates in 2019 with three specific UPC codes: 8660000020, Bumble Bee Chunk Light Tuna in water with best-by dates of Feb. 10, 16, 17, 18, 22, 23 and 25; 8660000021, Bumble bee Chunk Light Tuna in Oil, Feb. 23; 8660000736, four-pack Bumble Bee Chunk Light Tuna in Water, Feb. 9, 10, 22 and 29.

Tri-Union Foods is recalling 2,745 cases of 5-ounce cans, also with three specific UPC codes and with best-by dates in 2019: 0 4800000245 7, Chicken of the Sea Chunk Light Tuna in Water, Feb. 18, 22, 23 and 25 and March 2 and 3; 0 4800000195 5, Chicken of the Sea Chunk Light Tuna in Oil, Feb. 10.

Ag officials say consumers should throw away any product that matches the description and may request a refund from the retail store where it was purchased with proof of purchase. Consumers with questions can contact Bumble Bee officials at 1 (888) 820-1947 9 a.m.-6 p.m. or go online to www.bumblebee.com/recall-march-2016/. Chicken of the Sea officials can be reached by calling a 24-hour hotline — 1 (866) 600-2681.
