TIFTON – Southwell officials remembered the work of groundbreaking oncologist of Dr. James Milner, a highly respected medical oncologist and hematologist who played a pivotal role in the development and growth of cancer care services in the region, with his recent passing.
Milner, along with radiation oncologist Dr. Wesley Walker, was instrumental in establishing Tift Regional Medical Center’s oncology program, marking a significant milestone in the community’s health care landscape.
“Dr. Milner’s legacy is woven into the fabric of our oncology program,” RN Denise McAdams, the director of oncology at Southwell, said. “His commitment to providing compassionate care and his advocacy for combined cancer therapy management have set a standard that continues to guide us.”
The Anita Stewart Oncology Center opened its doors in 1998. Milner joined the medical staff in 1999 and quickly became known for his dedication to his patients and the field of oncology.
“Dr. Milner’s tireless efforts, especially during the early years when he served as the sole medical oncologist, were remarkable,” Claire Byrnes, the senior vice president for ambulatory services at Southwell, said. “Despite facing his own health challenges, he was always available for his patients. His dedication and passion for his work were inspiring to all of us.”
Before the establishment of the Anita Stewart Oncology Center, medical oncology services were provided at the TRMC main campus under the direction of contracted medical oncologists. Milner’s vision and leadership, alongside Walker, helped shape the comprehensive cancer care program that now exists at Southwell.
