PLAINS — On Monday, the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site will host a Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service event in conjunction with the Lillian G. Carter Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Officials with the historic site say members of the surrounding communities are encouraged to join them 2:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m. in a game of bingo with the patients of the Lillian Carter Center at 225 Hospital St. in Plains.

On the holiday on which the nation celebrates King’s birth and life of civil rights work, Americans across the country are encouraged to give back to their own communities in some way.

The center is named for the mother of former President Jimmy Carter, who as a registered nurse allowed people of all colors to enter her home, going against the norms of the segregation era.
