LEESBURG — The Lee County Board of Education extended the contract of school Superintendent Jason Miller by two years at its regular board meeting Monday evening. That new contract runs through June of 2019.

“I am honored that the board chose to extend my contract, and it is a privilege for me to serve the students and staff of Lee County,” Miller said. “I hope that the (extension) was the result of hard work and the commitment to the path we are on as we try to implement a new strategic plan for our schools and some of the other initiatives (former Superintendent Larry Walters) had begun.

“I’d like to think that was the reason (for the extension.)”

A native of Edison, Miller has been with the Lee County School System for the past 25 years. Prior to becoming superintendent, he served nine years as principal at Twin Oaks Elementary School and was an assistant principal at Kinchafoonee Primary and Lee County High School. While at the high school, he also taught social studies and coached basketball for seven years.

Miller earned bachelor and doctorate degrees from Valdosta State University in addition to a master of education degree from Albany State University.

In other action items at the meeting, the board approved the purchase of 40 new air-conditioned buses, which are expected to be delivered in January. After the new vehicles arrive, the system will upgrade 54 older buses with air conditioning.

DCSS also holds mid-monthly meeting

ALBANY — The Dougherty County School Board held its mid-monthly meeting at the DCSS administrative building Monday evening.

The complete agenda, which passed on a consent motion, dealt with approving the sale of surplus school equipment such as furniture, media equipment, Promethean boards, computers and office equipment.

The board also approved minor changes to the Student Code of Conduct and sex education policies.

Prior to the meeting, a Westover High Schools alumni group presented school principal William Chunn with a $5,000 donation to be used to benefit the school.

The next school board meeting is scheduled 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 28.
