AMERICUS — An arrest has been made in a 7 1/2-year-old homicide case in Americus, with charges being brought against a Georgia prison system inmate.
On June 29, 2009, the Americus Police Department asked the Georgia Bureau of Investigation field office in Americus to assist with the investigation of the death of Dorothy Jean Sheffield, whose body was found by a relative in her home located at 818 ½ Magnolia St., GBI officials said.
The GBI said that, as a result of continuing to conduct interviews, following leads and analyzing evidence, Dane Register was developed as a suspect. He was charged Wednesday with felony murder in Sheffield’s death.
At the time of Sheffield’s death, Register was residing with family who lived in the same area as the victim, the GBI said.
Register is an inmate at Georgia State Prison in Reidsville, where he is serving two life sentences in an unrelated 2011 murder case in Chattahoochee County, records from the Georgia Department of Corrections show.
