There are more than 3,000 people on the kidney transplant list in Georgia, according to the LifeLink Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to the recovery of life-saving organs and tissue for transplantations.
In towns across Georgia, long-overdue infrastructure improvements are finally moving forward thanks to over $36.2 million in federal grant funding awarded to 36 communities, including multiple southwest Georgia communities.
The Georgia Department of Community Affairs announced, Aug. 19, that 36 Georgia communities have been awarded more than $36.2 million in federal grants to support infrastructure projects and building projects. This includes southwest Georgia cities Parrott, Lumpkin, Colquitt and Lee County.
The 2025 GMA results were released in early August, and DCSS scores show that many of the strategies the school system has implemented are working.

Feeding the Valley, a Columbus-based food bank, which partners with over 300 agencies across south Georgia, including the Lord’s Pantry, distributed 15 million pounds of food across southwest Georgia in 2024. Frank Sheppard, Feeding the Valley’s CEO, said food insecurity rates are still 35% above pre-pandemic levels and most food banks face a shortage in food.
The Georgia Dept. of Transportation wrapped up construction on a new “R-cut” turn at the intersection of Nelms Road and U.S. 19, also known as the Liberty Expressway, by Aug. 8. This comes after years of public complaints about the safety of the intersection.
This conversation, which was the Albany Chamber’s annual State of the Community event, came just three days after a fatal shooting at an Albany event center and just two hours before a shooting outside of a convenience store on Slappey Boulevard.
