ALBANY — Traffic will be affected starting Sunday morning and continuing through Dec. 22 as Norfolk Southern Railway replaces, repaves and performs maintenance work on their railroad crossings in the city, Albany officials say.

The work is scheduled to start at 7 a.m. Sunday. While it is scheduled to be completed the Friday before Christmas, city officials say, bad weather or unforeseen circumstances could push back the ending date.

City Engineering Department officials say that because of the equipment and material required for the maintenance on Roosevelt Avenue, portions or entire blocks of Roosevelt Avenue from North Washington Street to North Madison Street may be closed.

North Jefferson Street will remain open for use as the major thoroughfare for the downtown area during the project .

These crossings will be closed during the work:

— North Washington Street at Roosevelt Avenue;

— North Jackson Street at Roosevelt;

— North Monroe Street at Roosevelt;

— North Madison Street at Roosevelt;

— North Davis Street at Roosevelt;

— Pine Avenue at Gillionville Road;

— Baldwin Drive between West Broad Avenue and Camp Lane;

— Magnolia Drive between West Broad and West Oglethorpe Boulevard;

— South Valencia Drive between Edgerly Avenue and West Highland Avenue;

— South Westover Boulevard between Gordon Avenue and Phillips Drive.

City officials say traffic control will be performed by Norfolk Southern’s contractor, Road Safe Traffic Systems. Motorists are advised to take detours around the closed crossings and roadway sections.

The maintenance repairs are planned to make smoother crossings and roadways adjacent to the tracks on Norfolk South ern’s rail system in Albany, city officials said.
