Travius Burch of Sylvester was among the students in the Georgia Southern Chorale and Southern Gentlemen who took home top honors in the “Laurea Mundi Budapest” Festival of Choral Music in Budapest, Hungary.

The Georgia Southern Chorale and the Southern Gentlemen won in competition July 9-13. The Georgia Southern Chorale, directed by Shannon Jeffreys, won the Grand Prix in the mixed choir category and the spirituals category. The Southern Gentlemen, directed by student Colin Harrison, won the open category in pop music and was invited to sing against the Georgia Southern Chorale in the Grand Prix.

The Chorale also participated in a number of workshops and masterclasses at the festival.

These Southwest Georgia students have completed graduation requirements for Troy University for the summer semester of the 2015-16 academic year.

Graduates include, from Albany, Niandria Ealey and Armetria Robinson, each receiving an associate of science in general education, and Ryan Matillo, Sherita Freeman, Kimberly Green and Santianna White of Albany, each receiving a bachelor of science; from Leesburg, Steven Mainor, bachelor of science in business administration, and David Mason, master of business administration.

Two metro Albany students have been named to the Troy University Chancellor’s List for the summer semester. Full-time undergraduate students who are registered for at least 12 semester hours and who earn a grade point average of 4.0 qualify for the Chancellor’s List. Making the list are Bernard Ford, of Albany, and Juanita Dennard, of Dawson.

These Southwest Georgia students have received scholarships at Valdosta State University. Receiving scholarships for the 2016-17 academic year are Christopher Dismuke, of Camilla, Regents President’s Choice Scholarship; Julie Jernigan, of Leesburg, Steele Scholarship; Nicholas Myers, of Albany, Georgia Power Scholarship, and Samuel Varnadoe, of Sylvester, Colquitt EMC Scholarship.

Rebecca Catherine Allen, of Leesburg, graduated from Samford University during recent commencement exercises. Allen earned a bachelor of fine arts magna cum laude from the School of the Arts.

William McLendon “Mac” Lanier, a 2012 graduate of Deerfield Windsor School in Albany, graduated this June from Georgia Southern University with a degree in Political Science. He was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity and achieved Dean’s List for his senior year. He will further his education this fall at Samford University’s Cumberland School of Law.
