ALBANY — The Thronateeska Heritage Center plans to debut a new exhibit on April 28 that will commemorate the Chehaw Massacre, an attack Captain Obed Wright of the Georgia militia ordered against the Chehaw Native American village.
The center plans to include Native American artifacts such as pottery, spear points and other finds in the exhibit. Wright was arrested after the attack. To document the events surrounding the massacre, Hannah Hembree, the programs manager for Thronateeska, said the center is “working on getting the letters now.”
Many of the artifacts came from Thronateeska’s McIntosh collection, an assortment of historical objects Henry T. McIntosh donated to the center’s archives department. Some of these artifacts have been shown before in different exhibits but went back into the archives since the displays are on rotation.
The exhibit opening will be from 10 a.m. to noon in the history museum. As of now, there is no definite end date for the display. Hembree said it would “probably run throughout the summer,” possibly ending on Sept. 14.
