ALBANY — The Westover High School RoboPats won the Rookie All-Star category during the GeorgiaFIRST Robotics district qualifying competition at the Albany Civic Center this past weekend, the first time the contest has been conducted in Albany.
Westover earned a berth in the Peachtree District State championship scheduled for April 14-16 at the University of Georgia’s Stegeman Coliseum.
The Terrell County High Shockwave also earned a berth at state by winning the Rookie All-Star category at an earlier qualifying event in Columbus.
More than 25 teams from across the state competed as well as three other Albany teams — The Albany Technical College Titan Alliance, the Monroe High Terminators and the Dougherty Trotek Warriors — in addition to the Calhoun County Robotics.
“The kids took a lot of pride in themselves their teammates and their school,” Monroe mentor Edrain Mallory said. “We got to network with other teams and learned about robotics and gracious professionalism at the same time. Everybody had a great time.”
The Titan Alliance won the Gracious Professionalism Award, Doughtery won the Creativity Award, Terrell County won the Rookie Inspiration Award, and Calhoun County won the Highest Rookie Seed Award.
