ATLANTA — Gov. Nathan Deal has appointed retired Georgia State Patrol Trooper Donald Whitaker to serve as interim sheriff of Worth County after Bobby G. Sapp, who was appointed to that position by Deal on Nov. 14, 2017, submitted a letter of resignation.

In an executive order signed by Deal on Wednesday, the governor said Sapp’s resignation is due to a “medical necessity.”

Sapp had been named interim sheriff of Worth County when Sheriff Jeff Hobby was indicted on charges that stemmed from a drug search of students at Worth County High School. After hearing from a tribunal that looked into the indictment, Deal suspended Hobby from office. Sapp was appointed to serve as sheriff until the disposition of charges against Hobby or the expiration of his term in office.

Hobby was re-elected in 2016 to serve a four-year term. The embattled Worth sheriff recently turned himself in after being charged with numerous counts of eavesdropping on privileged conversations of inmates.

Effective March 23, Whitaker will replace Sapp as interim sheriff and will serve under the same terms as his predecessor.
