SYLVESTER — A Worth County firefighter was taken to the hospital with injuries sustained fighting a structure fire Friday afternoon.

Officials with Worth County Fire Rescue did not identify the firefighter, but said the individual was taken by ambulance to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany and was “alert and responsive” Friday night.

County firefighters were responding to a 3:15 p.m. report of a single-story tin structure fire on Camp Osborne Road. Fire officials said a permitted burn of debris on the property was being conducted when windblown embers set the building on fire.

County officials called the Georgia Forestry Service to assist when the wind carried embers across the road and set a field on fire. Forestry officials extinguished that second fire, officials said.

Mitchell EMC also was called in to handle live power lines that were downed.

Worth fire officials said the blaze was extinguished shortly before 6 p.m.
