ALBANY — Most Southwest Georgians know they’re bad, but when the new Zika and not-so-new West Nile viruses are mentioned, their knowledge is limited.

With summer — and mosquito — season rapidly approaching, Ward I Albany City Commissioner Jon Howard hopes to increase knowledge about these viruses and other health issues that plague the area at his regular town hall meeting. Saturday’s gathering, which will be held at the East Albany Community Center, will start at 10 a.m.

Featured guests at the town hall include Jacqueline Jenkins with the District Epidemiology and Surveillance office and James Davis, director of Environmental Health/county manager for Dougherty County.

Questions about the Zika and West Nile viruses, their spread, their symptoms and how to prevent them will be answered at the town hall meeting. The experts will also answer questions about any other public health issues during the hour-and-a-half meeting.

The community center is located at 1721 E. Oglethorpe Blvd. The meeting is open to the public.
