The Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday signed free agent right-hander Brandon Beachy to a one-year contract with a club option for 2016.
Beachy, 28, is expected to begin the season on the disabled list, as he continues to recover from his second Tommy John surgery — which kept him out for all of 2014. Beachy, non-tendered by the Atlanta Braves in December, has pitched in only five major league games over the past two seasons and 18 over the past three.
Beachy will make $2.75 guaranteed. The 2016 option will be worth between $3 million and $6 million, depending on how much he pitches in 2015, according to ESPN.com.
Beachy said Saturday he will take as much time as he needs to recover from surgery.
“It’s definitely taken patience and perseverance. Going through it the second time was harder mentally, definitely, but it feels worth it at this point,” Beachy said at the Dodgers’ spring training camp in Glendale, Ariz. “It’s going to feel even more worth it a few months from now.”
Beachy has gone 14-11 with a 3.23 ERA in 46 major league starts with the Braves from 2010-13. In 267 2/3 innings in the majors, he has limited opposing hitters to a .220 batting average and posted a 3.20 strikeout-to-walk ratio, striking out 275 and walking only 86.
Beachy had a breakout season in 2011, going 7-3 with a 3.68 ERA in 25 starts with the Braves. Beachy’s 169 strikeouts in 141 2/3 innings led the club and placed second among rookies, with his average of 10.74 strikeouts per nine innings.
Through 13 starts in 2012, Beachy led the majors with a 2.00 ERA and a .171 opponents’ batting average before he underwent his first Tommy John surgery on June 21. Following rehab, he made only five starts with the Braves in 2013 and needed to have a second Tommy John surgery on March 21, 2014.
To create room on the 40-man roster, the Dodgers placed right-hander Chris Withrow on the 60-day disabled list.
