ALBANY — A driver was found dead Saturday shortly after noon in a crash on North Jefferson Street, Dougherty County Police Department officials said.

Officers responded to 2816 N. Jefferson St. around 12:15 p.m. Saturday to find that a vehicle driven by Jimmie Wayne Thompson had struck a tree. The motorist had to be extricated from the vehicle and was pronounced dead on scene.

Lt. Ray Curry with DCPD said that Thompson was determined to have been heading north when he veered off the east shoulder. He struck a culvert and went airborne over the driveway at 2816 N. Jefferson St. The vehicle then struck a water spigot and fence before impacting the tree, he said.

The vehicle Thompson was driving, a 2013 Chrysler 200, was found resting on the driver’s side. It traveled 92 feet from the first point of impact, Curry said.

The Albany Fire Department and Dougherty County Coroner Michael Fowler were among those to respond to the wreck. It was not clear Monday as to what caused Thompson to lose control of the vehicle.
