Mediacom strikes deal to carry SEC Network

ALBANY — Southeastern Conference sports fans in Southwest Georgia will have access to the new SEC Network now that Mediacom has reached a deal to carry the new network.
Mediacom released a statement that the agreement highlights a larger, long term deal between Mediacom and the Walt Disney Company, the parent company of ESPN, the details of which have not yet been released.
According to Phyllis Peters, communications director for Mediacom, executives for both ESPN and the media provider by the finishes touches on the deal late Thursday afternoon.
In Albany, Mediacom customers with the “Family Cable” package that includes ESPN, A&E and Fox News, will be able to watch the new network in HD on Channel 834. Mediacom customers can watch in non-HD on channel 51. The deal takes effect immediately.
The agreement means Southeastern Conference sports fans in Mediacom markets will have access to SEC Network before the network broadcasts its first football game of the 2014-2015 season, featuring Texas A&M at South Carolina on August 28.
Mediacom subscribers will also have authenticated access to additional content on SEC Network’s digital platforms, such as WatchESPN and SECNetwork.com. They will also have the ability to watch SEC Network live and on demand content on either television, computer, tablet or mobile device.
“Our cable systems in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri and Tennessee are located in the heart of SEC country,” said a statement from Ed Pardini, Senior Vice President of Operations for Mediacom. “By launching the SEC Network, we will bring even more live college sports action to SEC alumni and fans.”
With the deal, Mediacom now joins other carriers in the Albany area, including Dish Network and DIRECTV in providing access to the new network.
The SEC Network came about due to a 20 year agreement between the SEC and ESPN to create and operate a multiplatform network that will carry exclusive SEC-related content 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In the first year that includes, SEC Network specific shows, 45 SEC football games, more than 100 men’s basketball games, 75 baseball games and other events from across the SEC’s 21 sports.
