MICHAEL AQUADRO: America not Christian? Au contraire
Michael Aquadro
I was troubled by the recent commentary “Thank secularists for Christmas.” Surely the article was an attempt at humor since the author’s credits include stand-up comic, but was in extremely bad taste. The author does not believe that America is a Christian nation. She asked, “How are we a Christian nation?”
Let me count the ways.
The article confirms that America is a Christian nation by tolerating religious criticism. That is “turning the other cheek.” (Luke 6:29) There are non-Christian nations in the world where insulting religion could warrant imprisonment or death.
The author tried to discredit Christianity by listing human shortcomings, but she highlighted the magnificence of Christianity. All humans have fallen short of the grace of God. Thankfully, God is merciful. “God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16) That is the reason for the season and the reason for our Hope and Joy.
I agree the Pilgrims did not found America. But if one reads the writings of the men who did found the United States, it is evident they were deeply religious. Not only in their personal writings, but God is referred to several times in the Declaration of Independence. They believed God is the source of our liberties and providence. Every state constitution makes reference to God. Our presidents are sworn in with hand on bible, to indicate their recognition of the ultimate authority. Few people are aware that following George Washington’s inauguration, he led the first Senate and House of Representatives to St. Paul’s chapel to pray. Most likely for God’s guidance over our country.
The United States is not a theocracy, but was founded on Judeo-Christian principles. Moses holding the Ten Commandments is on the facade of the Supreme Court building. The symbolism is obvious. As stated in the article, sin is not illegal (in most cases). Christianity teaches repentance and forgiveness, similar to the workings of our judicial system. Those who stop their illegal/sinful behavior, after making amends, are forgiven. Just as Christ who said to a sinner: “Neither do I condemn you, go and sin no more.” (John 8:11)
Contrary to what was stated in the article, the concept of equal rights and freedom for all is biblical in origin. “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” (Galatians 3:28) This was the initial teaching that led to freedom and equality for all.
Many times, America has sent its young men and women to war to protect others from oppressive nations and the tyranny of some non-Christian-led regimes. Not to conquer, but to free. That is an honorable foreign policy. “Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Mark 12:31) “No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” (John 15:13). Christ said it and he did it.
The Bible is not anti-rich as stated. Jesus used the parable about talents to explain we are given different gifts in life. The important point is that we use them wisely. (Matthew 25:14-30) Jesus asked a rich man to join his disciples, but he loved his worldly wealth more than heavenly treasure. (Matthew 19: 16-22) America is an extremely generous nation. Consider the millions of dollars contributed to relief organizations whenever a natural disaster strikes anywhere in the world. “I was hungry and you gave me food, naked and you clothed me …” (Matthew 25:35) It is impossible to ignore the contributions made to this country and the world by Christian organizations: churches, schools, charities and hospitals. Our nation has truly become the city of light on the mountainside. (Matthew 5:14)
Yes, people will try to profit on occasions such as Christmas. That will never replace the meaning of Christmas, reflection on Christ’s first coming and joyful anticipation of his return.
I believe our Christian heritage is responsible for America’s many blessings. President Reagan said it best: “If we ever forget we are One Nation Under God, then we will be a nation gone under.”
Finally, anyone who regularly goes to church you realize there is the usual Sunday crowd of believers. However, at Christmas churches throughout the nation are overflowing. For 364 days a year, many may not admit it, but at Christmas most realize in their hearts whose birthday it is.
“America not a Christian nation.” I respectfully reply — Humbug!
