COLQUITT — Miller County coach Frank Killingsowrth could only say one thing to sum up Friday night’s wild, crazy, bonkers victory against a larger Northview, Ala., team that dressed some 80 players and saw the game end on a last-second, 32-yard rushing TD by Shaq Edwards to give the Pirates a 28-22 win.
“We gave the fans their money’s worth (Friday night),” Killingsworth said.
Did they ever.
With the score tied, 22-22, with under a minute to play, Northview was driving down the field and was on the Pirates’ 20 yard line — and well within field goal range to end it. But then Alec Cobb forced a fumble and Alex Anderson recovered with 46 seconds left, setting a play no one will soon forget in Colquitt.
Miller QB Caleb Cunningham found Edwards for a 46-yard catch that left the ball at the 32-yard line with eight seconds left. The Pirates hurried to the line, spiked the ball and Killingsworth called in one final play from the sideline.
“We had 25 seconds to get the play in and (Northview) was playing so far back because they thought we had to go to the end zone and pass it, so I called a run,” the coach said.
Yes, a run – from 32 yards out.
Edwards took the hand off, followed two lead blockers until he reached the second level and stormed in for the score — and the crowd went nuts.
“(Whether that call was) crazy or not, a win is a win,” Killingsworth said. “I’ve only been involved in one game in my whole career that was crazy as this one.”
Miller led most of the game thanks to three rushing TDs from T.T. Barber as he finished with 64 yards on 13 carries. Worth mentioning was the running of Marvin Grant, who carried the ball nine times for 87 yards and Edwards, who had eight carries for 71 yards.
But Northview scored with under four minutes to go and tie the game, 22-22, then got the ball back and began a drive that looked like doom for Miller — that is, before Cobb and Anderson’s big defensive play and Edwards’ heroics.
“We knew that run play (on the final play) was there because Shaq went 70 yards earlier in the game and it was called back,” the coach said. “All we had to do was get it into his hands, get him to the second level and I really thought we could score. And we did.”
