SYLVESTER — A scam involving bogus checks and money orders has surfaced in Southwest Georgia and the Sylvester Police Department wants the public to be aware.

Sgt. Kenneth Washington with the SPD says the version of the scam surfacing in Worth County starts with the targeted person receiving an item in the mail. Washington said the material offers an “opportunity” for the resident to deposit the fake check in his personal account, reduced only by a smaller processing fee. The fee comes ultimately from the victim and the check is declined by the bank, Washington said.

Washington warns area citizens to be on the lookout for checks or money orders from Woodforest National Bank. According to officials, the documents have a routing number of 14565777 and account number of 113008465.

Residents who encounter the fake checks or money orders should notify the Sylvester Police at (229) 776-8500 or any other law enforcement agency, Washington said.
