Monroe track & field teams sweep region meet

ALBANY — The Monroe boys and girls track & field teams continue to act as a tandem first taking the L.C. Smith/Benson Relays meet last month and the region championship on Thursday at Hugh Mills Stadium.
Both teams were crowned Thursday evening as the girls finished with 205 1/2 points, while the boys finished with 142.
“We always have that expectation [of winning region], but our boys kind of surprised us a little bit because we had some guys step up and do some things that were above and beyond,” Monroe coach Billy Glanton said. “A couple of our guys PR’d and had their best throws of the year today, so we’re starting to peak. We don’t want to them to peak until we get to the state meet of course.”
There were a few snafu during the relays and a few field events that both teams were able to overcome, but Glanton said they’ve got to clean up the little mistakes moving forward.
“[We’ve got to work on] fine tuning hand offs,” he said. “Hitting all the points on the throws and jumps. We still got a little bit I know we need to sharpen up.”
The Westover girls took second with 149 points. Head coach Octavia Jones said he felt they gave maximum effort, though the outcome wasn’t what they hoped for.
“It’s certainly not what we had in terms of goals. We wanted to defend the region title, but the girls came out and pretty much performed to the best of their ability and brought home the second place.”
The boys finished fourth and Jones said it’s just indicative of what kind of season they’ve been having.
“I’m extremely disappointed with the boys,” he said. “We didn’t hope to come in fourth place. We had aspirations of defending the region title on the boys side. It’s been a long year on the boys side and we weren’t able to put things together like we wanted to.
Albany High had four freshman girls qualify for sectionals and head coach Jessica Thomas said them achieving success this early means ‘we got a good three years ahead of us.”
Despite having a very young group of athletes, the Lady Indians finished third overall with 77 points.
“I’m very pleased with their performance today in coming in third place,” Thomas said. “Majority of my team is ninth and 10th-graders, so I’m very pleased with what we’re working with.
“At the beginning of the season I told my freshman and sophomores to step up and they stepped up to the plate and stepped up to the challenge, and I’m very proud of them.”
