Monroe’s Duntarrius Toomer signs with Point University

ALBANY — Just a few weeks after Point University signed Monroe High School’s Brenton Truitt, the Skyhawks snatched another member of the Tornadoes’ heralded defense on Wednesday.
Defensive tackle Duntarrius Toomer signed a letter-of-intent to play at Point.
“They gave me an opportunity to further my education and continue playing the game that I love,” Toomer said. “It’s just a blessing to continue doing what I do.”
The 6-foot, 285-pound defensive tackle was one of the strongest players on the team, benching 400 pounds and squatting 600. He had received some interest from LaGrange, Kennesaw State and Fort Valley State.
Monroe football coach Charles Truitt said some schools backed away because they thought Toomer may not have adequate size to fit into their system.
“I think he has a tremendous upside,” Truitt said of the three-year starter. “Point feels good with him coming in. They believe he can come in and hold his own and fight for playing time.”
Point, which competes in the NAIA and plays in the Appalachian Atlantic Conference, was formerly known as Atlanta Christian College. It moved to West Point, Ga., changed its name, then started a football program in 2011.
“It’s a situation where he is eager to play and he’s used to playing,” Truitt said. “So he’s going to do everything he can to be successful at Point.”
Toomer said he liked the environment.
“The campus is perfect,” he said. “It’s good for everything I want to do. Plus, they have my major and it’s the perfect size.
“The coaches have been straight-forward with me and they didn’t beat around the bush. They told me I was going to have to step in and earn my stripes.”
