North Georgia hub fueling agricultural research at UGA

ATHENS — Research in the University of Georgia’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences runs the gamut: from plants, animals and dairy science, and crop and soil sciences to entomology, food science and technology, and more. It’s an expansive agenda, too broad to be housed on the university’s 760-acre main campus.

For that, CAES turns to its eight off-campus research centers:

— Georgia Mountain Research and Education Center

— Northwest Georgia Research and Education Center

— Phil Campbell Sr. Research and Education Center

— Southeast Georgia Research and Education Center

— Southwest Georgia Research and Education Center

— M. Stripling Irrigation Research Park

— Attapulgus Research and Education Center

— Vidalia Onion and Vegetable Research Center

Each of the eight centers helps CAES follow through on its mission to seek, verify, and apply knowledge related to agriculture and environment, shared through its student education and public outreach programs.

The Georgia Mountain Research and Education Center includes 415 acres in the north Georgia mountains of Blairsville. The center features various soil types and modern field equipment, facilitating research into varieties of apples, blueberries, cut flowers, vegetables, sweet corn, field corn, soybeans, cattle, wine grapes, and more.
