ALBANY — As the holiday season begins, Phoebe reminds everyone to prioritize their health and take steps to reduce the risk of respiratory illnesses. Although current respiratory virus activity, including flu, COVID-19, and RSV, remains low, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention anticipates activity will increase in the coming months, with peaks typically occurring from December to February.

Large gatherings, travel and more time indoors during the holidays can contribute to the spread of respiratory viruses. Fortunately, there are several tools available to help protect the community so we can all enjoy the season with peace of mind.

Phoebe encourages everyone to follow these tips to stay healthy:

— Get Vaccinated: There is still time to benefit from getting recommended immunizations for flu, COVID-19, and RSV. Vaccines are a safe and effective way to reduce the risk of severe illness and hospitalization. Flu shots are available at all Phoebe Primary Care Clinics.

— Seek Antiviral Treatment: If you do get sick with flu or COVID-19, antiviral medications can help reduce the severity of illness. These treatments are especially important for individuals at higher risk of severe complications.

— Practice Prevention: Everyday actions like covering coughs and sneezes, improving ventilation, staying home when sick, and washing hands often can significantly reduce the spread of respiratory viruses.

“Vaccines and prevention strategies are vital tools to help us protect ourselves and others during the holiday season,” Phoebe Putney Health System Chief Medical Officer Dr. Dianna Grant said. “By staying proactive, we can enjoy our celebrations while keeping our loved ones safe from respiratory illnesses.”

To support health needs during the busy holiday season, Phoebe Urgent Care clinics will remain open with extended hours to provide care when it is needed most. Phoebe also encourages everyone to have a primary care doctor they see regularly.

“As primary care physicians, we want to build close, long-term relationships with our patients,” Phoebe Physicians Medical Director for Primary Care Dr. Derek Heard said. “The better we know you, the better we can work together to keep you healthy. Our team is here to ensure you, and your family have access to the care and resources you need to stay healthy during the holidays and all year long.”
