ALBANY, Ga. — Just before taking a tour of the Dougherty County Courthouse Friday, Gen. David Poythress — a Democratic candidate for governor — said he hopes his substantial time in South Georgia during his campaign will resonate with voters in what could be a close primary.

Arguably the candidate with the most time spent south of the gnat line, Poythress said he doesn’t believe the concept of “two Georgias” will benefit anyone seeking statewide office.

“I believe anyone running for a state office depends substantially on the support from those voters in the southern part of the state,” Poythress said. “We only have one Governor, and if I’m elected, I’ll serve all of Georgia.”

Running in a packed Democratic field, Poythress said he believes his message is resonating with rural voters and that when the votes are counted July 20, South Georgia may make the difference.

Like most other candidates, Poythress said jobs are going to be the chief focus of the state’s next top executive, and that he believes alternative fuel technology in particular could be the industry that helps South Georgians.

Poythress is currently making a southern swing through the state.

Over the next week he plans stops from Shellman to Waycross, courting votes and spreading his message.
