PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Seminole County boys down Rabun County to advance
From staff reports
DONALSONVILLE — In Kevin Godwin’s nine seasons of coaching high school basketball, he said he has never seen anything like Saturday night.
His Seminole County Indians advanced to the quarterfinals of the GHSA Class AA state tournament with an 83-66 victory over Rabun County.
The Wildcats sank 15 3-pointers in the game and made just six regular baskets.
“That was pretty unreal that they hit 15 3-point baskets … that was just unbelievable,” Godwin said. “We hit 13 ourself, but it wasn’t like we weren’t guarding them. That was one of the most unbelievable games I’ve ever been a part of as far as 3-point shooting is concerned.”
The Indians advance to meet Manchester in the quarterfinals on Wednesday. Since both teams are No. 1 seeds, they’ll have to meet for a coin flip to determine who will host.
But Seminole will want to enjoy Saturday night’s game a little longer. The Indians led by a point at halftime, then increased it to five heading into the final period before a run midway through the quarter sealed the victory.
“The fans definitely got their money’s worth,” Godwin said.
Herald Super 6er Jordan Harris finished with a game-high 22 to lead the Indians. Jahmyka Pearson added 20, while Alex Fudge tossed in 14. Anfernee King and Dwayne Samson finished with 12 and 11 points respectively.
MODEL BOYS 62, EARLY COUNTY 56: In Rome, Model eliminated Early County from the Class AA state tournament Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats had trouble penetrating Model’s inside defense and had to settle for perimeter shots.
Qubilah Hall led the way with 19 points for the Bobcats, while Traquez Wells added 10 points. Tracy Beacham and Malik Thornton added eight points.
DOOLY COUNTY BOYS 62, RANDOLPH-CLAY 56: In a mild stunner, Dooly County took control in the fourth quarter and eliminated Randolph-Clay in the boys Class A public school first round.
The Red Devils led briefly early in the final period before Dooly outscored them 21-13 the rest of the quarter to post the victory.
Keyshawn Baker led Randolph-Clay with 18 points, while Herald Super 6er Gary McCrae finished with 14 points. Cody Brown added 10.
PRAISE ACADEMY BOYS 71, SHERWOOD CHRISTIAN: In the first round of the GICAA Division I Class AA boys state tournament, Praise Academy eliminated Sherwood Christian Saturday afternoon at Central Fellowship. No other details were available.
