EDISON — The basketball season opened with some drama on Tuesday night.

The Calhoun County boys survived in overtime against Americus-Sumter, 67-61, in a wild affair.

It was a big win for the Class A Cougars against the Class AAAA Panthers.

Andre Carroll led the way for County (1-0) with 21 points, while Marques Williams and Andres Carr both chipped in 12.

Knyhiah Zachary was the only other Calhoun player in double figures with 11.

Calhoun survived the efforts of Tyler Moore with 19 points and Deonte Fulks with 18 points to outscore Americus, 8-2, in the overtime period.

AMERICUS-SUMTER GIRLS 53, CALHOUN COUNTY 49:

Jayme Gilbert was just too much to overcome.

The Americus-Sumter junior and top returning player from last year’s Lady Panthers posted 27 points in her debut as the go-to scorer.

No other player scored in double figures for the Lady Panthers (1-0).

The game was tied entering the fourth quarter, but Americus pulled away in the final minutes. DeAngel Harris (12 points) and DeAmber Harris 910) led the way for Calhoun County (0-1).
