LEESBURG — Qualifying for municipal elected offices opens in Lee County on Monday, with incumbents up for re-election in Leesburg and Smithville for the Nov. 7 election date.

In Leesburg, the terms for Posts 4, 5 and 6 will expire at the end of the year. Candidates should qualify in the city hall of the city where they reside.

“They conduct their own qualifying,” Lee County Election Supervisor Veronica Johnson said of the two municipalities.

The incumbents in Leesburg are David Daughtry in Post 4, Rufus Sherman Jr. in Post 5 and Amanda White in Post 6.

Elections will be held for any of the posts in which there is opposition. If only one candidate qualifies, no election will be necessary for that seat.

Qualifying hours for Leesburg are from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. on Friday.

The qualifying fee is $54.

In Smithville, qualifying will be held for the mayor’s office and for District 1 and 2 seats.

Mayor Vincent Cutts is the incumbent, and the City Council incumbents are James K. Champion in District 1 and Shalnica French in District 2.

Qualifying will run from 8:30 a.m.-noon.

There are about 2,276 registered active voters in Leesburg and about 424 in Smithville, Johnson said.

Qualifying also will be held next week in Albany.
