Residence built by Nelson Tift named Albany Yard of the Month

ALBANY — An 1880s home built by Albany’s founder has been selected as the Yard of the Month for November by the Daffodil Garden Club.

The residence, owned by Jean Graham, is located at 603 N. Jackson St.

“This beautifully restored home was built in the 1880s by Nelson Tift, the founder of Albany,” said Marideane Maxwell, chair of the Daffodil Garden Club’s monthly recognition program. “Constructed of yellow pine imported from upstate New York, the home contains original wood flooring throughout and one is reminded of architectural elegance of yesteryear.”

Maxwell said Graham has “a flair for decorating and coordinating,” which has resulted in her adding “her own spin on this piece of history.”

“Note the impressive urns placed on roof of porch,” Maxwell observed. “Flowing ferns and planters with colorful mums at the entrance to the home welcome you to the inside.

“The side yard features a lovely stature surrounded by a bed of flowers.”

Maxwell said Graham will soon be adding Christmas decorations to the yard. “So you will need to go by the home more than one time,” she said.

The Daffodil Garden Club chooses a home each month. Club members say they hope that others will be inspired to add a new feature at their home or add a pot of color that will make Albany a beauty spot to visit.

The club meets at 2 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month at Federated Garden Center on Fifth Avenue. The next meeting is scheduled for Nov. 19.
