Rezoning request to allow apartments withdrawn

LEESBURG, Ga. — A metro Albany investment group that wanted to develop a 260-unit upscale apartment complex in south Lee County withdrew its application for rezoning Tuesday less than three hours before the issue was to be heard by Lee County Commissioners.
Jim Bacon, representing Flint Ventures LLC, sent an email to County Clerk Christi Dockery at 3:07 Tuesday expressing the desire by Flint Ventures Inc. “to formally withdraw its application for the rezoning of 29 acres along Old Leesburg Highway from C-1 General Business to R-2 Multi-Family for the development of an apartment complex.”
Flint Ventures LLC has been seeking to rezone that section of the 322 acres it purchased in 2005. Bacon earlier said the development carried a price tag of $23 million and could mean as much as $4.4 million in governmental revenue to Lee County over the next decade.
The apartments would have been built and managed by Graystone Development in Columbus.
There were indications there were three firm “no” votes on the commission going into Tuesday’s meeting and two other commissioners who were undecided.
The matter can be brought before the commission again. The makeup of the commission changes in January.
