RUBY BRITT: Christian values are under fire
Ruby Britt
In America, “we the people” making decisions as to the kind of society in which we wish to live was the foundation of freedom. In fact, the Constitution of the United States dictates the federal government only have powers specifically granted it by the Constitution and all other powers belong to the individual states. However, recent Supreme Court decisions affirm that is no longer true.
But, hey! President Obama has been making decisions circumventing the Constitution for years now. When conservatives or Christians (usually the same) disagree with culture changes, it must be because we are ignorant, racist, and “using religious liberty as a weapon,” according to columnist Catherine Rampell.
If any of those Northern pollsters bothered to check with Southern Christians, they might find that although most do hold to traditional marriage, believe abortion is murder, and sex outside marriage wrong, we come in various colors and the main thing from which we claim exemption is eternal life in Hell. Thankfully, that’s not up to the president or the Supreme Court. The blood of Jesus Christ provides that at no cost to the recipient.
The spirit is strong but the flesh is weak. It is hard to be IN the world and not OF the world, and even harder when our leaders pass civil laws that mandate we break God’s laws.
I cannot speak for Catholics, but Baptists as a rule are NOT against contraception or HIV testing, and we certainly do not believe in child labor. We want adults in the workforce, taking care of their own children. However, government should not mandate an employer pay for birth control for employees, any more than they would cover the cost of beer or cigarettes.
As far as religious liberty being used as a weapon – well, God’s Holy Word does “cut like a two-edged sword.” Scripture warns us to put on the whole armor or God … “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” (Ephesians 6:12)
