ALBANY – The Back the Blue 5K run will offer the opportunity to get in an early-morning run while supporting a local organization that provides tracking devices that help locate vulnerable individuals who get lost.

The 5K kicks off at 8 a.m. at the Rib Shack, located at 2206 Dawson Road, with a 1-mile Donut Dash starting at 8:30 a.m. Registration is $25 for the 5K and $15 for the Donut Dash. Participants will receive a T-shirt, and prizes will be awarded.

The annual run benefits Project Lifesaver, which provides location bracelets for special-needs children and adults with dementia, two groups whose members frequently wander away.

The Back the Blue 5K has been raising funds for several years to support local first responders who participate in the national Project Lifesaver program. Local law enforcement agencies can use the funds to purchase tracking devices or for other associated costs of the program.

The program supports agencies in Dougherty and Lee counties.

Currently, the organization is trying to get the word out that the service is available, race co-organizer Livingston Fulton said.

“One of the things we’re really trying to get out to people who need these bracelets is that there are funds available,” he said. “Right now, Dougherty County doesn’t have anyone who is on the program.”

Individuals interested in Project Lifesaver can contact one of the participating agencies, which includes the Albany Police Department, Dougherty County Police Department, Dougherty County Sheriff’s Office and Lee County Sheriff’s Office.
