SCREAM SCENES: Creating the creatures of Netherworld Haunted House

For the creative team at Netherworld Haunted House, there’s a huge difference between a startle and a scare, which is why they work so hard to set the scene for visitors.
Ben Armstrong, co-founder of the popular attraction, says it’s a labor of love for the creative team to craft terrifying moments for people using over-the-top special effects and intricate sets; while every element is important, the actors are a vital piece of that puzzle.

“This is a stage that we’ve created for the actors,” Armstrong said. “The special effects and animatronics are neat, but it’s not the same as a living, breathing creature that’s watching you in the dark.”
Without the team of talented make-up artists turning the actors into gruesome ghouls, haunting ghosts and unearthly monsters, true frights wouldn’t be possible. Head of Netherworld’s make-up department, Roy Wooley, and his team of artists take great pains to add texture, depth and detail to each creature.
